“I hate your city. It has standardized all the beauty out of life. It is one big railroad station — with all the people taking tickets for the best cemetaries.”
Sinclair Lewis, Babbit, 1922

Loyalty Day?

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim May 1, 2007, as Loyalty Day. I call upon the people of the United States to participate in this national observance and to display the flag of the United States on Loyalty Day as a symbol of pride in our Nation.”

Apparently May 1st is now “Loyalty Day” in the United States. I understand celebrating patriotism and loving our country, but isn’t this sort of a facist way of phrasing it?

Edit: Apparently this ‘holiday’ has been around for years, and finds it’s origins in the fifties, when the holiday was created to “counterbalance the celebration of Labour Day on May 1st, which was perceived as communist.” (wikipedia)

Yet another redesign. I think I’ll leave this one for a while, I’m taking a liking to it. I was getting annoyed at how much the old site resembled the cover of JPG magazine.

The sexy new background pattern comes from 44suburbia and I strongly suggest you go check out her stuff, it’s pretty awesome.

Without further adeu, Jillian has tagged me for a meme. I’m supposed to tell you five thigns I’m passionate about, then tag five people to repost. I honestly don’t think five people read this blog, but by all means, let me know if you repost this.

  1. Photography. Anyone who knows anything about me could have told you this without hesitation: I am completely obsessed with photography. My photography portfolio is linked at the top of this page, and my flickr is on the right sidebar. I also collect film cameras, which reminds me that I should inventory those and post them here.
  2. Books. Again, my large collection and complete lack of bookshelf space is all the proof you should need. Books on architecture, photography, graphic design, cooking, history, and of course the classics and everything Bill Bryson has written. I also love to write, though I don’t get around to doing it much these days.
  3. Design. Design in all its forms. Architecture, Graphics, Fashion…I love it all. I feel that design is multi-disciplinary, and to appreciate one facet well requires an understanding of design as an all-encompassing entity.
  4. Cooking. i love to cook. That’s really all there is to say. Italian, Asian, American, French…I just love to cook.
  5. My Amazing Wife, Lisa Whom I have listed last, though certainly not least, and I could go on for pages about how wonderful she is and how she makes me complete, but thats not what this blog is all about. :)
